description: Taking advantage of an opportunity to introduce the new name of the engineering building in an interesting and slightly provocative manner, we propose a design that is subtle in geometry and material yet demonstrates the art of engineering. The cantilever is used here to take a massive and brutal object (which would otherwise be set in ground and anchored to the floor) and project it horizontally into space in a seemingly gravity defying manner. Doing so provides a prominent location for the building’s new name while simultaneously portraying itself as an engineering problem solved in a unique and somewhat bold manner. The proposed concept is intended to remind those walking around campus of the order, strength and truth which are inherent to engineering.
